Hales Corners was once again home
to the Wisconsin State Championships. With a long climb, a sand

Sheehan Park an
excellent addition to the WCA Series
Sheehan Park was another new race
added this year to the WCA series. The main hill provided not only
a great vantage point to watch the race unfold but also a spot of
torture for many a rider. With a run-up that was rideable only for
the strongest riders (and not even guaranteed for them) there was plenty
of suffering to get to the top. Added to the run-up were
many smaller climbs and some great off cambers on the long course.
The course did have some straight-aways but they seemed to be straight
into the strong wind that was blowing so it was hard to ever feel like
one was going as fast as they should be.
In the elite women's race Alyssa
Severn (Team Magnus) took her first win as a Cat 2 with Sarah Huang
(Planet Bike) with her for much of the race and only conceding to 2nd
place late in the race. Abby Strigel (Pegasus) rolled in not far back
for 3rd place. For the elite men's race it was also a two racer affair
with Jordan Roessingh (Nova IS Corp) making a move on the back stretch
heading into 1 to go and breaking away from Isaac Neff (Unwin Chiro&Wellness).
A battle royale was on for 3rd place between David Staab (GDVC), Tim
Pacholski (Velo Trocadero) and Cory Stelljes (Uphill Grind). The 3
came into the finish stretch together but David Staab read the sprint
just right to take 3rd.

Next up in the WCA
Series - Sheehan Park, Sun Prairie
Don't forget a donation for the
MadCross Food Drive
Don't miss the new Sun Prairie
race location = Sheehan Park. This cross course includes a
number of sweet technical features such as a STEEP run up and great
twists and turns The run up is the perfect vantage point to cheer
and heckle just steps away from registration and the food vendor. Yes,
there will be warm food available from Sun Prairie's Market Street Diner
who you will remember from the USGP.
Map of course.
The race also includes some great ways to give back! MadCross
would like to encourage racers who win cash to donate their winnings to
Marko's Euro Campaign (why not give directly and save on those pesky
PayPal fees). In
addition, MadCross is organizing a food drive to benefit the Sun Prairie
Food Pantry. Sun Prairie has done a lot to help out cyclocross racing
and now we can do something good in their community. To further
entice people to bring a donation everyone who donates will be entered
into a raffle for great prizes. Prizes have been donated by:

The Planet Bike WCA
Series takes over Estabrook Park
Another mild Fall day greeted
racers at Estabrook Park in Milwaukee. The race featured most of
the classic elements that racers have come to expect at Estabrook Park.
A long drag from the start line towards the disc golf course before a
few corners led to the pinwheel. The pinwheel spit you out towards
a set of 2 barriers and then bang a second set of 2 barriers. Over
the barriers and a long straight away led you to the woods and the short
run-up. Then straight through the woods a few more turns and back
to the start/finish.

Halloween Fun at
Halloween Classic and Wizzard Cross
A weekend of good cross fun was
had at Washington Park in Milwaukee and Warner Park in Madison.
Racers were treated to coffin barriers, twists and turns, run ups and
wizards lurking in the woods. Washington Park featured its
infamous Halloween race with costumed racing adding to an already fun
day. Warner Park featured the first cyclocross race in a City of
Madison park with a course that featured corners, fast barriers, log
crossing and a great run-up.

Warm Temperatures at
Grafton Pumpkin Cross
Riders were greeted with an
unseasonably warm day at Lime Kiln Park in Grafton for the 2nd annual
Pumpkin Cross. This made for a challenging day as riders raced
around a course that included a long, steep climb, a sand pit, and 2
barrier sections. In the elite women's race Samantha Schneider (Tibco)
once again rode to a win and for the elite men Issac Neff (Unwin
Chiropractice & Wellness) took his first win of the season.

Wind, Sun and Rain
highlight Cross at the Domes
The inaugural race at the Mitchell
Park Domes was a huge success for new WCA promoters, My Wife Inc.
And it was truly a fall cross day with temps in the low 50s, a strong
wind and the occasional cold rain shower in the afternoon. The 3k
course contained a little of everything with a double sand pit, a killer
climb that snaked up a steep bumpy incline and plenty of twists and
turns. In the elite fields mountain bikers took the day with Abby
Strigel taking the women's win over Holly Klug and in the men's race
Brian Matter breaking away from Mark LaLonde to take the win.

Coverage of the
Greenware USGP Planet Bike Cup
Before I link to all the great
coverage of the Greenware USGP Planet Bike Cup I want to thank the over
150 volunteers, tons of racer hosters, all the great sponsors, everyone
who raced, and the City of Sun Prairie and Angell Park Speedway.
Without all of the dedicated volunteers this event would not be
happening. Of course, the same goes for the sponsors and the
racers. Also need a huge shout out to the venue and the city who
treat us so well and help us out even when it is a crazy last minute
request.

Greenware USGP Planet
Bike Cup arrives in Sun Prairie
Once again the Greenware USGP will
be in Wisconsin with riders from throughout the US, Canada and Europe
competing for top prizes. Here's some things you should know about
the USGP Planet Bike Cup.
1. Volunteers - It takes more
volunteers than you can imagine to make this event happen and more are
needed for the weekend. If you can help out contact
Renee.
2. Registration - Do it
online by Wednesday of race week or
pay $10 more (elites required to pre-reg). You can pick up your
registration materials Friday from 6-8pm at
Williamson Bicycle on West Washington Ave in Madison or onsite
starting at 7am on Saturday and Sunday.
3. Parking - It costs $3 per car.
Be nice to our volunteers working parking as it is one of the least
popular volunteer gigs.
4. Food - There will be food
onsite and it is good food. The Market Street Diner in Sun Prairie
is our main vendor. There will also be beer and other drinks
available.
5. Pre ride -- The course is open
for pre-riding on Friday from 2-4pm weather permitting.
6. Vendors - The expo will have
quite a few vendors this year including Schlamm for all your cool USGP
tshirts and such, Stanley for your thermoses, flasks, etc, Clif Bar
sampling, Bob's Red Mill sampling, and so much more! Check it out
while you're here. Sram will be doing neutral support. Specialized
will be in town.
Muddy day at No Good
Double Cross to Start Wisconsin Cross Season
The
Kettle Moraine
Ranch was a new venue this year and we all had reason to be thankful
that the owners are OK with re-seeding grass this fall! A brief heavy
downpour in the morning absolutely soaked the course just prior to the
first race of the day and turned an interesting technical course into a
technical MUDDY course. The
steep hill climbs
were greasy and at times 4 inches or so deep in muddy ruts, the corners
were decent if you picked the right line but some could be sticky or
slick if you didn't. The "sand pit" was probably more rideable wet than
it would have been dry for many riders. There were a few good
off-camber corners that had dried out decently to provide a nice fun
technical challenge. The run-up was a long set of slightly uneven
railroad-tie stair steps, and a fantastically enthusiastic cheering
section had set up shop (with cowbells and cymbals) halfway up. They
cheered just as loudly for the back of the race as for the leaders!

US Gran Prix of Cyclocross
returns to Wisconsin
The Planet Bike Cup returns to the
USGP in 2010 once again kicking off the Series in style on September
25th and 26th
at one of the most
popular venues in Wisconsin: Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie,
Wisconsin. Sun Prairie is located 15 miles from downtown Madison,
Wisconsin. Belgian Superstar Erwin Vervecken gave the course high marks
last year, deeming it "a real cross venue!" High praise indeed. The
course is challenging and features terrain change, off-camber technical
riding and some short sharp climbs. It's also a perfect venue for a
good time - offering great spectating, yummy yummy food and plenty of
beer!
Registration is now open.

Lake Country Endurance debuts new
course
Saddle up, CXers as Lake Country Endurance
brings you a new venue this year. After 13 years of Lapham Peak, we are
moving to a new pasture. We present to you The No Good Double Cross. Set
in a mock Old West town in Eagle, WI at the Kettle Moraine Ranch, the
course has sand, gravel, billy goats, and features a stair runup to a
hilltop Chapel that will have you praying for one less lap.
LCE is raising the bar this year, literally!
The Jack*^# Saloon will be open, air conditioned and serving (legally of
course) as well as the venue for awards.
If that was not enough to get your spurs shined
up, we will also be trying something new this year. Each race will
feature a 2nd Lap Prime. Cash or prizes to be determined. Donations
accepted. To see the town go to

90 feet of climbing per lap. There are many off camber
turns, a long climb, a sand pit, and two bridge
crossings. The course make up is 89% grass, 6% asphalt

a place to hang out, post race. Homemade soups from

great course for spectators, so bring your friends and
family
State Championship Photos
MadCross won't be
taking photos at the State Championship race at Hales
Corners but hopefully lots of others will be out
snapping pics. However, maybe you'd like something
special to remember the event. If that's the case
then
Focal Flame Photography will be at the race. Photographer
Clint Thayer specializes in custom, artistic shots and
has started coming out the cyclocross races where he has
been capturing some sweet images. If you want to ensure
a shot at this last race of the season then contact
Focal Flame at

Keeping positive park relations
As newcomers to
being allowed to use the Madison Parks for cyclocross we
always need to be careful when we are out riding.
For better or worse everyone of us is an ambassador for
the sport and people are judging all of us by the
actions of one or two. Luckily I know that Madison
cyclocrossers are a good group of people and no one
would want to jeopardize our ability to be in the parks.
However, our behavior can easily be misconstrued by
people who are not use to training or racing on their
bikes. Our super slow may seem super fast to them.
Our completely in control can seem to them reckless and
out of control.
Read the following
emails and always be aware of how you're being
perceived when out in our great parks.
Give Back
There are lots of
things we as cyclocross racers can do to give back to
the communities that allow us access to places to race
and to support the racers who make going to a cross race
so fun to watch. Here are a few ways you can give
back in the near future:
1. Participate in the upcoming food drive at the Sun
Prairie Cup CX race at Sheehan Park. See story
opposite.
2. Make a donation
to Mark LaLonde to make it possible for him to mount a
European Cyclocross racing campaign. Mark is
headed to Belgium in December to take it up a notch and
race against the world's best. This is sure to
make him an even better rider which in turn will make it
even more fun for us to watch him race. Let's show
him some support by donating.
He has a paypal set up on his blog.
3. Give back
directly to a race. That could be something as
small as emailing the City of Madison to let them know
you appreciated racing at Warner Park. It could be
helping out directly with course set up or take down at
one of the remaining races.
Let Madison Parks Know You Liked Wizzard Cross
Thanks to Team Magnus for successfully navigating the
process to get the first official cyclocross race in a
Madison City Park. If you liked the race and would like
to see racing continue in Madison City Parks please send
a note to the City Park's Director and the local
alderperson to let them know. In your message please
let them know that you raced (or spectated) at the
recent cyclocross race held at
Warner Park in Madison and that you appreciated
the opportunity to race in such a great location. You
can also mention that you are a resident, visitor,
parent of a racer, master's racer, or whatever to let
them know the diverse array of people who enjoy the
great sport of cyclocross.

2012-2013 'Cross
Nationals go to Madison; Event moved to January
Wisconsin State Journal article
Colorado Springs, Colo. (October 28, 2010) -- USA
Cycling is pleased to name Madison, Wisconsin as the host
city for the 2012-2013 Cyclo-cross National Championships.
Additionally, the national governing body announced today
that for 2012 and 2013, the event will move from its
traditional dates during the second week of December to the
first week in January.
Although the United States has held its cyclo-cross national
championships in December for a number of years, the move to
January was proposed to better align the event with the
international calendar. Additionally, the move will better
support the U.S. athletes who are training to compete in the
world championships slated for Louisville, Ky. later in
January.
USA Cycling originally began the discussion surrounding the
date change last year. After a participant survey showed
member support for the move, the final decision was
confirmed this fall.
“To make sure this decision was in the best interest of our
members, we distributed a survey to 2009 Cyclo-cross
National Championship participants,” explained USA Cycling
National Events Director Kelli Lusk. “When a large majority
came back and said they would support moving the event to
January, the decision was made to move the national
championships to the UCI-designated weekend.”
Because next season’s national championship will take place
in January of 2012 and this season’s is scheduled for
December of 2010, there will not be a cyclo-cross national
championship event held during the 2011 calendar year.
Organized by the
Madison Area Sports
Commission and
Team Sports Inc.,
the 2012 event will take place January 4-8 in Madison’s
Badger Prairie/Reddan Park where warming tents and plenty of
shelter will help ensure the warmth and safety of racers and
spectators.
The USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships were last
held in the Midwest when Kansas City hosted the 2007 and
2008 editions. Since then, the event has been held in Bend,
Ore. (2009-2010). The city of Madison, which has also played
host to the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National
Championships (2010 and 2011), is happy to welcome the
annual cyclo-cross event back to the Midwest for a two-year
commitment.
“We know that Madison’s great cycling culture and
enthusiastic cycling fan base will create a memorable
experience for the racers competing in these events,” said
Jamie Patrick, Director of Sports Sales and Program
Development, Madison Area Sports Commission
"We are truly honored and excited to host the 2012/2013 USA
Cycling CX National Championships,” said Tom Schuler of Team
Sports, Inc. “I know that the rest of the country will
quickly learn what midwesterners know already, that the
greater Madison area is an incredibly cycling-friendly
city.”
More on Wizzard Cross at Warner Park
Wizzard Cross,
Madison, Wisconsin’s first ever off road cycling event, will
be held at Warner Park on October 31st. This
Dungeons and Dragons themed cyclocross race will have a
dazzling warlock dressed in ancient wizard garb to start
each race. Riders will be unleashed onto a course featuring
two steep climbs and one run up per lap, fast flats along a
geese filled lagoon and twisty turns around a mystic forest
of oak trees guarded by the night errant Paladins. Riders of
age can quench their thirst with strong (and free) ale from
Lake Louis beer and anyone with an appetite can feast upon
food from The Underground Food Collective. The aura of glory
will be bestowed upon those who conquer the course and
finish in the top 3 (juniors, women cat 3 and 4, masters 45+
and 55+ cat 4) or top 5 (men’s cat 3 and 4, masters 35+ cat
4, women 1/2, men 1/2, open masters) with either merchandise
or cash. Those who win merchandise will find generously
donated items from our sponsors: Craft, Gore, Planet Bike,
Buttonhole, Cognition caps, Shimano, Saris, Vaude, Uvex,
Just Coffee, Lake Louis and the Wisconsin Cheeseman. There
might even be a special item or two from a sage master
wizard. And he who tackles the walrus shall drink its
lukewarm blubber.

STANLEY Built for Life® Tour Hits the Road for Cross-Country
Adventure
Maker of the legendary Vacuum
Bottle brings the Built for Life® Road Tour to US Gran Prix of
Cyclocross Series in
Sun Prairie, WI
on September 25th
Madison, WI (September
23, 2010) – STANLEY, a brand of PMI, proudly announces
that the Built for Life® national road tour will be
rolling into the
Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI, for the US Gran
Prix of Cyclocross race
on September 25-26 weekend. Race attendees are encouraged
to stop by the Classic 1967 refurbished Airstream turned
traveling showroom and check out some of the amazing stories the
Stanley brand has collected over its near 100-year history.
Stories include incredible feats of strength and performance
like the man whose Stanley bottle stopped a bullet from hitting
his wife and the man who used his Stanley bottle as a jack for
his boat.
“People have a really strong connection with the Stanley brand
and the Built for Life Tour® is designed to celebrate that
relationship. We want to display the real-life tales of
durability, heritage and survival and also encourage a new
generation of Stanley users to share their adventures with our
products,” explains JoAnne Anderson, PMI Senior Marketing
Manager for the Stanley brand.
Aimed at connecting with consumers through their passions, the
tour will make stops at outdoor sporting and music events across
the nation. It will also stop at partner retailers, and other
outdoor and urban city landmarks along the way. The tour will
run through
December 2010, finishing off at the US Gran Prix of
Cyclocross Race in
Portland, OR.
Support
Women’s Cyclocross
At the Greenware USGP
the top 3 elite women receive the same payout as the top 3 elite
men even though the UCI has set the minimum payout at
ridiculously different levels. On Saturday the race is a UCI C1
event where events are required to pay the 1st place
male winner $2,350 but the 1st place women’s winner
is only required to be paid $266 (staggering difference for
sure).
The 4th
place woman is only going to win $115 which won’t even pay to
fly her bikes to Wisconsin. Although the Greenware USGP would
like to pay more than the top 3 women equal prize money with
sponsorship dollars so hard to come by it isn't possible at this
time. That’s why Regional Director, Renee Callaway, came up
with the idea to provide travel grants to elite women who need
some additional support.
You can help make the
travel grants possible. Becker Law Office has agreed to match
every dollar that is raised for the travel grant program so your
$1 equals $2 into the fund. Currently already $350 has been
raised from locals so we have $700 to be awarded. However, the
goal is to raise at least $1,000 from local clubs and racers so
we can award at least $2,000 to racers. To donate use the
PayPal button below or contact
Renee to send a check.
