Make it a Madison Cross Weekend!!

The big Madison cyclocross weekend will have more than just two great races.  Local promoters and a few other cross enthusiasts have put together some extra-curricular activities for after Saturday’s race.  First, there will be a showing of the new cycling video “Cyclofile” at Escape Java Joint, 916 William St.  Showing is free and starts at 5:00pm  and goes until 6:00pm.  ALSO, Madison cross racers invite you over to the 1331 E. Dayton St bike loft for a post cross party and FREE BEER!!  The party starts at 5:00pm and is only a short distance from Escape so come out and make it a Madison cross weekend.  Directions for both events will be available at the Cam-Rock race.

Don't miss the demo bikes at Badger Cross

Race sponsor, Schwinn, will have their popular cyclocross bike at Badger Cross so that riders can check out their great locally designed cross bike.  The Schwinn Fastback CX is popular with many local racers so stop by the Schwinn booth and find out about this great racing bike.

In addition, Independent Fabrications will be on hand to show off their great cyclocross bikes.  Indy Fab is in town to show local racers what this great east coast company has for bikes.  Don't miss this opportunity to put rubber to the dirt and see what Indy Fab is all about.

Badger Cross elite race preview

With $150 on the line for the winner of both the men's and women's elite races at Badger Cross the action will be well worth watching.  The Women's elite race looks to be shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested races in recent history.  Team Kenda Tire's Kristin Wentworth will be on hand looking to repeat her victory at Badger Cross in 2006.  However, rumor has it that she may have some new competition in the likes of road racing powerhouse Julie Foertsch and top mountain bike racer and recent Ironman finisher Sue Juedes.

However, the competition doesn't end there as last week's race at Lapham Peak showed the strength of a number of riders from Illinois such as Devon Haskell (Team Get-a-Grip) and Jennifer Greenberg (Triple X).  Patti Kaufman (PCW) is the veteran racer of the field with more than one national championship title and is always one to watch.  Team America's Dairyland's Rachel Eichers is also expected to return to cross racing after a hiatus last season.

Team Kenda Tire's depth also goes beyond Wentworth with Susan Uphill and Monique Karlen also looking strong.  In addition, collegiate racer Holly Liske (Hayes) may be in attendance and as the 2005 winner (on a mountain bike) will also be a strong contender for a podium spot.

As the sponsoring team the Capitol Velo Club also hopes its riders will shine on their home course.  Renee Callaway has set out the last two races with an injury but is hoping to be back for Badger Cross.  CVC's Michele Ericsson, Shannon Holmes, Samantha Kaplan and Heather Curnutt are also expected on the line to contend for the $475 prize list.

The Men's elite race looks to be wide open with many top riders headed to Ohio for the UCI race weekend including 2005 and 2006 race winner Tristan Schouten (Planet Bike).  With Marko Lalonde (Bob Brown Cycles/BKB) also headed to Ohio the race is expected to be wide open.  Jim Holmes has focused more on running this summer but with his cross experience he will be one to watch.  Luke Batchelor-Clark (Team Magnus) sits 4th in the series and this race could be the opportunity he needs to move up the series rankings.  Chris Strout (Team Met Life) will be considered a top contender if his injuries from the last WORS race of the season don't keep him from the start.

However, the ranks of men that could come out on top is quite extensive.  Tom Bender (Wheaton Franciscan) looked strong at Lapham Peak and has to be considered one of the top contenders for one of the podium spots.  Ron Stawicki (Hayes) is another one of the many singlespeeders that seem to dominate the local racing scene and also will be giving chase for one of the top spots.

In addition with the Wisconsin Off-Road Series coming to an end we may see even more top mountain bikers coming out to ensure that the racing is fast and furious.  Add to that other Illinois riders that may be planning to try and take the prize money to the other side of the "cheddar curtain" and the racing should be top notch.

Special Mountain Bike Prizes for Cat 4 races

To encourage racers without cross bikes to attend Badger Cross special prizes will be awarded in the Cat 4 races.  The top finisher on a mountain bike in the Cat 4 Women's race, Cat 4 Men's race and the Cat 4 40+ race will receive a merchandise prize.  As cross grows in Wisconsin more and more people are racing on cyclocross bikes.  However, it isn't necessary and racers without a cross bike are strongly encouraged to come on out and give it a try.  "I began my cross racing career on my mountain bike and fell in love with cross," says Renee Callaway, Badger Cross Race Director.  "I don't want racers to think they have to have a cyclocross bike to get started so we've decided to offer prizes to our top Cat 4 racers on mountain bikes as a special incentive to get people out racing."
