USA's Summerhill grabs 2nd place at Worlds

Daniel Summerhill capped off his amazing season by sprinting to a second place finish in the 2007 UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships.

After charging into the front group at the start of the race, and even setting the pace on one of the early laps, his success looked to be in doubt when he suffered a nasty spill on a muddy descent with 2 laps to go. Showing tremendous determination, Daniel shook off the crash and quickly charged back up to the leaders. On the last lap, the lead group hit the finishing stretch together, and Daniel sprinted to an unbelievable second place finish – becoming the first American to medal at the World Championships since 2000.

Tristan Schouten earns nominations to world championship 'cross team

Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 9, 2007)— USA Cycling announced today automatic and discretionary nominations in the elite men’s category for the 2007 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships scheduled for January 27-28 in Hooglede-Gits, Belgium.  Three athletes met automatic qualification criteria, while three more earned discretionary picks.

The top-three men ranked in the top 50 of the latest UCI standings – Ryan Trebon (Ventura, Calif./Kona), Tim Johnson (Middleton, Mass./Cyclocrossworld.com) and Barry Wicks (Corvallis, Ore./Kona) – all met the first condition with a top-50 international ranking.  Trebon also captured a national title at last month’s USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships and won the overall Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclo-cross series.  Ranked 19th in the world, Trebon joins Johnson and Wicks who are ranked 31st and 47th respectively.

Discretionary picks include Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Cervelo), Erik Tonkin (Portland, Ore./Kona) and Tristan Schouten (Sheboygan, Wis./Trek-Volkswagen).  Page and Tonkin have each posted impressive results in Europe this season with Page scoring a second-place finish at Nordzeecross, a UCI category-two race in Middelekerke, Belgium last month and Tonkin placing 16th at a similar event in St. Niklaas, Belgium.  Schouten’s success this season was all domestic based with a 15th-place finish at the national championships and several top-ten finishes in UCI-sanctioned races throughout America.

Bjorn Selander named to US World Cyclocross Team

In the U23 men’s division, four additional athletes were named to the US team as Bjorn Selander (Hudson, Wis./Alan Factory Team), Chance Noble, (Camarillo, Calif./California Giant Strawberries-Specialized), Nick Weighall (Mill Creek, Wash./Alan Factory Team) and Dan Neyens (Seattle, Wash./Hagens-Berman LLP) all met discretionary criteria.

Selander placed third at the national championships and eighth overall in the USGP to earn consideration.

New Venues Highlight 2007 US Gran Prix of Cyclocross Schedule

December 13, 2006
The management team of the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross has announced the dates and venues for the 2007 US Gran Prix – the Official National Cyclocross Series of USA Cycling. The 2007 schedule will again include six days of racing, four of which will take place in new venues. The schedule includes:

USGP Trenton - October 27-28 (Mercer County Park, West Windsor, NJ)*
USGP Louisville - November 17-18 (River Road Country Club, Louisville, KY)*
USGP Portland, Oregon - December 1-2 – (Hillsboro, OR)
* New venue for 2007

“In the last three years, the sport of cyclocross has grown exponentially and the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross has become the most popular and exciting race series in North America and the premier ‘cross series in the US,” said Bruce Fina, executive director, US Gran Prix of Cyclocross. “In 2007, we look forward to bringing the excitement that is the USGP to two new parts of the country -- New Jersey and Kentucky and returning to Portland, one of the true hotbeds of cyclocross.”

The series will kickoff on October 27 – 28 in West Windsor, NJ just outside the state capital of Trenton, in Mercer County Park. The second stop will be Louisville, Kentucky at River Road Country Club on November 17-18. The series will again return to Portland, Oregon December 1-2 for the fourth consecutive year.

Although some of the venues will be different, spectators can still expect the top ‘cross riders, great competition and racing action.

"One of the founding tenets of USGP is to bring together all of the best riders -- elite and espoir men, women and juniors -- so they can go head-to-head. It's crucial, both nationally and internationally, for USGP to serve as the premier series for this competition. With our new schedule and venues, the 2007 USGP will continue to fuel the growth we are seeing in American cyclocross," Geoff Proctor, USGP Technical Director.

More information will be released in the coming months regarding the 2007 USGP. For more information on the U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross, visit www.usgpcyclocross.com.

US Gran Prix of Cyclocross is owned and operated by ProG LLC. ProG is a joint venture promotions company combining the excellence of 16 years of Cross Worlds Championship experience and g4 Productions.

About MadCross

Some of you may wonder what the deal is with MadCross.  MadCross started very simply when Renee Callaway took a few photos of friends at a cross race back around 2000 or so.  Renee had sprained her knee so wasn't racing.  Of course, friends showed the photos to others so then friends of friends wanted to have photos taken.  Then complete strangers asked to have their photos taken.  Renee started by just putting the photos on a basic photo sharing site.  Then an informal website was stated to add write ups about the races.

Next thing it seemed like a good idea to buy a domain name and start a real website.  Then Renee went to the Banff Film Festival and was inspired to buy a video camera.  Of course, all those photos and videos take up space so upgrades to the website were needed and a real photo site was needed.  The new photo website allowed for the sale of photos which helps defray the website costs.

Renee also uses MadCross.org to do some fundraising each year for racers headed to CX Worlds.  Unfortunately USA Cycling provides minimal to no assistance to our cyclocross team.  Last year calendars and posters were sold to benefit Bjorn Selander's trip to Worlds.  In addition, each year a compilation of videos from the season is made available for a donation to the World's team.

However, the main purpose of the MadCross.org site is to serve as a way to promote our local race scene and to get more people excited about trying the sport.
