Chicago Cross Cup concludes Dec 3
The fourth and final race of the Chicago
Cyclocross Cup racing series on December 3 will double as the Illinois
State Cyclocross Championship. The race will be held at Montrose Park;
lead sponsor is Turin of Evanston.
The course makes use of the many natural
and manmade areas of the park. Riders can expect a well-rounded course
using pavement, gravel track, grass and sandy areas with off-camber and
running sections mixed into each lap.

Chicago Cyclocross Cup can be found at

Schouten takes 2nd at North Carolina UCI Race
The Sunday men's race began with Jon Hamblin (RGM-Richard Sachs) taking
the hole shot. However, Matt White (Fior de Frutta) stated that, "today
I was not going to play nice" made a huge move on the 180-degree turn
after 'the wall' and by the end of the prologue section of the course
had already established himself as the leader. Midway through the first
lap, he held a 22 second lead over an eight-man chase group.
With a few from the group not content racing for second, gaps began
to open up during the second trip up 'the wall.' Michael Cody (Fior de
Frutta), winner of Saturday's race, was the first to break out of the
group. Tristan Schouten (Trek-VW), Adam Myerson (Nerac), Charlie Storm
(Inland Construction) and Hamblin followed. With both Frutta boys, who
had raced together the previous day up the road, the chase group became
unsettled.
It was Schouten, who had enjoyed the courses in North Carolina so
much last year he made a return trip, made it worth it as he made a huge
effort to bridge up to Cody. After one lap together, the two resolved to
work together when it was obvious that Cody would not make it up to his
teammate. On the final lap, Schouten made a move in the woods to lead
into the last few technical sections and opened up enough of a gap to
roll in for second on the day. Cody completed out the podium in third.
At Saturday's UCI race Tristan placed took 5th place. Good luck
to Tristan as he continues his East Coast cross campaign!
Selander third in Under 23 race at last USGP
On a muddy and rainy day in Portland, Ryan Trebon (Kona) and Lyne
Bessette (Cyclocrossworld.com) won the 2006 Crank Brothers U.S. Gran
Prix of Cyclocross series championships. Trebon finished fifth but
mathematically had the series championship locked up entering the day.
Bessette held a slight advantage over Georgia Gould (Luna) entering the
day and finished second to Gould's third to successfully defend her USGP
title. On the final day of the six-race national series, it was Tim
Johnson (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com) taking the men's race and
Katerina Nash (Luna) besting the women's field at the Scion Stumptown
Cup in Portland, Oregon.
In the U-23 competition, it was Morgan Schmitt (Hagens-Berman LLP
Cycling) taking the win. Jamey Driscoll (FiordiFrutta) the series leader
finished second followed by Bjorn Selander (Alan Factory Team), Chance
Noble (California Giant Strawberries/Specialized) and Jesse Anthony
(Team Clif Bar). Jamey Driscoll takes the U-23 USGP series win and the
automatic USA Cycling world championship selection.

New Venues Highlight 2007 US Gran Prix of Cyclocross Schedule
December 13, 2006
The management team of the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross has announced the
dates and venues for the 2007 US Gran Prix – the Official National
Cyclocross Series of USA Cycling. The 2007 schedule will again include
six days of racing, four of which will take place in new venues. The
schedule includes:

USGP Louisville - November 17-18 (River Road Country Club, Louisville,
KY)*
USGP Portland, Oregon - December 1-2 – (Hillsboro, OR)
* New venue for 2007
“In the last three years, the sport of cyclocross has grown
exponentially and the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross has become the most
popular and exciting race series in North America and the premier ‘cross
series in the US,” said Bruce Fina, executive director, US Gran Prix of
Cyclocross. “In 2007, we look forward to bringing the excitement that is
the USGP to two new parts of the country -- New Jersey and Kentucky and
returning to Portland, one of the true hotbeds of cyclocross.”
The series will kickoff on October 27 – 28 in West Windsor, NJ just
outside the state capital of Trenton, in Mercer County Park. The second
stop will be Louisville, Kentucky at River Road Country Club on November
17-18. The series will again return to Portland, Oregon December 1-2 for
the fourth consecutive year.
Although some of the venues will be different, spectators can still
expect the top ‘cross riders, great competition and racing action.
"One of the founding tenets of USGP is to bring together all of the best
riders -- elite and espoir men, women and juniors -- so they can go
head-to-head. It's crucial, both nationally and internationally, for
USGP to serve as the premier series for this competition. With our new
schedule and venues, the 2007 USGP will continue to fuel the growth we
are seeing in American cyclocross," Geoff Proctor, USGP Technical
Director.
More information will be released in the coming months regarding the

Janesville Cyclocross race debuts in classic cross
style
The Janesville Velo Club debuted their cross race at
Gibbs Lake Park in true cyclocross style. Racers were treated to a
cold, snowy day and with the sun shining conditions quickly turned to
mud. Even without snow and mud this course would have challenged
riders with twists and turns, a long extended climb on the back section
of the park, and a small run along side the lake.

About MadCross
Some of you may wonder what the deal is with MadCross. MadCross
started very simply when Renee Callaway took a few photos of friends at
a cross race back around 2000 or so. Renee had sprained her knee
so wasn't racing. Of course, friends showed the photos to others
so then friends of friends wanted to have photos taken. Then
complete strangers asked to have their photos taken. Renee started
by just putting the photos on a basic photo sharing site. Then an
informal website was stated to add write ups about the races.
Next thing it seemed like a good idea to buy a domain name and start
a real website. Then Renee went to the Banff Film Festival and was
inspired to buy a video camera. Of course, all those photos and
videos take up space so upgrades to the website were needed and a real
photo site was needed. The new photo website allowed for the sale
of photos which helps defray the website costs.
Renee also uses MadCross.org to do some fundraising each year for
racers headed to CX Worlds. Unfortunately USA Cycling provides
minimal to no assistance to our cyclocross team. Last year
calendars and posters were sold to benefit Bjorn Selander's trip to
Worlds. In addition, each year a compilation of videos from the
season is made available for a donation to the World's team.
However, the main purpose of the MadCross.org site is to serve as a
way to promote our local race scene and to get more people excited about
trying the sport.
