Washington Park Cyclocross Race Halloween and cyclocross. Two things that go great together. On Sunday, October 31 the cyclocross racers invaded Washington Park in Milwaukee. It was a day with a light wind, slightly overcast and temperatures in the 50s. The park featured a variety of terrain including a hill run-up with two barriers, some fast asphalt bike path sections, a flat set of three barriers, a short steep climb and, of course, a bumpy section. Halloween hangovers and trick or treating obligations kept some at home but those who showed up were there for serious racing even those in costume. The A race featured a familiar set of faces with PCW racers dominating the race. Brian Matter took the win dressed in his Rocky Horror Picture Show finest. However, he sustained a rip in his fishnet nylons on a first lap crash. Luckily he overcame that to form a two-up break away with his teammate Tristan Shouten who finished second. In the Women’s A/B race Rebecca Cleveland (Team Bike Hub) once again dominated the race. Rebecca took the lead on lap one and held for the entire race. In second place was Patti Kaufmann (Team Wisconsin) and in third place was Samantha Kaplan (Capitol Velo Club). Sporting a cow costume Susan Uphill made her cyclocross debut for the season finishing a strong fourth place. In the 30+ field a few of the usual suspects sat this one out such as Paul Roltgen who was suffering from the flu. However, that didn’t slow the field down as Travis Goodlund (Stoton Cycle) took the hole shot and the group set a fast pace for the first few laps. Soon a lead group of four formed with Travis including Ben Lund (Endeavour), Scott Topel (Brazen Dropouts) and a XXX Athletico rider. However, eventually Ben made his move to split the group. Scott and the XXX rider slowly gapped Travis off their wheels and then Scott made his move. That was it and the finish was Ben first, Scott second and XXX racer guy third. In the B Men's race Casey McCauley (UW Stevens Point) scored his second win in a row. In the race for second, Jeff Melcher (Pedal Moraine) just barely edged out Mark Harms (Brazen Dropouts). However, watch out for Mark at the next race as his finishing speed is picking up and he might just win the next sprint. The Velo News article submitted by the racer promoter claimed there was a clown and a Brett Favre at the race. If you have photo proof of that please send me the photos to add to the website.
