Cam-Rock Cyclocross Race
Sunday, October 19, 2003
For once the website owner is going to leave the story
to someone else:
This came over the Bombay Bicycle Club listserv from
Joe King regarding the Cam-Rock race:
Of yesterdays cyclocross action I saw three races. All of them interesting with
the Men's 30+ being one the most strategic I've seen. Gene Tolli's attempt to
escape off the front mid-way through the race probably cost him a higher
finishing place. While John Ericsson finished 4th (in the money) by saving
himself through most of the race and then getting himself into the winning move
which came after Gene was caught with four or five laps to go.
One of the more eventful moments occurred in the Women's "A" race. In that race
Faye Hartmann crashed badly right in front of me. Her left brake lever broke off
just as she was preparing to jump the felled tree. She hit the tree hard with
her rear wheel and after a couple valiant efforts to bring things under control
she went over the handle bars, digging her shoulder into the dirt. She put two
fingers out of commission for the remainder of the race but got back on her bike
and stayed away for the win -- despite having no front brake and misshapen
handlebars!
