Warm weather greets racers in second race in cyclocross series Temperatures were mild and the sun was shining for the second race in the Wisconsin Cycling Association Cyclocross Series. The Cam-Rock County Park race consisted of an approximately two kilometer course that wound through almost all the trails at park area #2. In the women's field it was a smaller field but the race was even more hotly contested than the season opener. The top three riders were close together for the whole race and once again the race came down to the final lap. This time Megan Monroe (UW Cycling) came out the winner (riding a mountain bike). Going into the last lap, Megan, Rebecca Cleveland (Green Bay) and Faye Hartmann (Brazen Dropouts/Cronometro) were all together. However, a powerful surge by Megan pulled her into first place with Rebecca holding on to second and Faye a strong third. The C race was held at the same time as the Women's race so there was plenty of action to keep the fans yelling. A good fan club was present to cheer on the Chain Smokers and Dave Reddington was the top finisher for the team in a strong third place. Other notables from the Chain Smokers were Dave Alling and Jason Plansky who turned out for their first cross race of the season. The B race was wide open as Gene Tolli (Brazen Dropouts/Cronometro) decided to move up to the A race. John Ericsson (Brazen Dropouts/Cronometro) took advantage of the opportunity to take the win in a decisive fashion. John went out strong and never let up. The second and third place racers battled to the end with the Stoton Cycles racer, Travis Goodlund, ending up in third. Jason Cambell (Chain Smokers) had a strong race in his first B race leading home a small group. David Bell (Chain Smokers) was notable for changing his 2.1 mtn bike tires for faster 1.8 tires and looked to be moving a bit faster in his second race. The A race was the last day of the race and the temperatures were near perfect. Once again I didn't stay to the end but from the start Frank Dierking (Great Dane Velo Club) was way out front. Gene Tolli was looking strong as were a number of other local racers from Brazen Dropouts/Cronometro as well as the Great Dane Velo Club. All in all it was another great day of cross racing . . . but is it possible to have good weather for three races in a row?? We shall see as the next race is November 4 in Milwaukee.
