Large women's field shines at Cyclocross opener
Rebecca Cleveland (Green Bay) scored a win in
the first race in the Wisconsin Cycling Association Cyclocross
series. Rebecca was fast from the start but in no way was this an
easy win. Faye Hartmann of the local Cronometro/Brazen Dropouts team rode hard on her
local course and the race went down to a closely fought sprint.
The most exciting part of the day though was the
last minute change from running the women's field at the same time as the
Men's C race. This along with a change to add more prizes added to
the excitement of the women's race. A special thanks to Samantha
Kaplan (5th place) for her encouraging words to the promoter.
The men's races were equally well contested.
In the B Race Gene Tolli took off and lead the race the whole way.
John Ericsson made a surge half-way through the 40-minute race to take
second place away from Paul Nilsen. A 1-2-3 sweep for the Cronometro/Brazen
Dropouts team. First in the "sad guys on mountain bikes" category
was David Bell of the Chainsmokers.
At the start of the A race a brisk wind was blowing
but there was no rain and not too cold. A sizeable field looked to
be in attendance but unfortunately due to the brisk wind I went home and so
have nothing to report. I saw one guy with a mountain bike . . . and
junior racer Zack Davies looked ready to take on the field. The rest
will have to remain a mystery.
As for the C race it was about 20 strong with lots
of mountain bikes out on the course. Williamson Bicycle Works ace
mechanic and all-around good guy, Kevin Pulaski, was riding his pretty
Croll cross bike but suffered an unfortunate meeting with a barrier and
had to pull out. Chainsmoker Dirk Mason flatted and had no wheels in
the pit so he was out as well. Lots of carnage out there for the C
race!
